PET SYMPTOMS

the eye is composed of various structures. The proximal portion of the eye is used to function in sight. The first structure of the eye is the cornea. The cornea is a thin layered membrane used to protect the eye against harmful light rays. Just past the cornea lies the pupil of the eye. The pupil is the dark centered circle in the eye. The pupil acts as a funnel for light to enter the eye in order for light to refract and produce an image. The pupil acts much light a projector machine to produce images on a white canvas. The white canvas in the structure of the eye is called the retina, located in the back of the eye. In order to focus in on an image the eye uses the structure called the iris. The iris is the ring around the iris which has a variation in colors. The iris acts like a focal lens on a camera to produce a clear image to the brain. These various structures work together to allow the outside world in view, but in cases such as cataracts that view can be compromised.

A cataract is a sudden clouding of the orbit’s lens of a cat or dog. Cataracts are found mainly in pets of older age due to the fiber proteins breaking down or binding together within in the eyes. Cataracts can be mild or severe; in a mild case the patient can visualize objects but unclearly. In a severe cataract case the patient can lose sight all together therefore becoming blind. Other complications which can lead to cataract formations include medication usage, disease of the skin, genetics, radiation, or trauma.
