Heartgard Plus Chewables, manufactured by Merial, is a de-wormer complex medication containing active ingredients of ivermectin and pyrantel. This medication is used in canines to treat internal parasites.
Hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma braziliense, Roundworms (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina), and heartworms

Rounds worms, hookworms, and heartworms affect the majority of the canine population across the globe. Whether infestation occurs for a short or carried out duration, dogs have battled internal parasites at least once in their lives. Although pet owners may do what they can to prevent parasites, the worms find their way into our pets by any means possible. Parasitic worms, such as the roundworm, hides within elements dogs enjoy eating. Raw meats, road kill, and fecal matter are all routines of possible roundworm transmittion. Roundworms are long, spaghetti like worms which, often killing young pups. This form of roundworms harbors the internal intestines, consuming a dog’s nutrition.

The heartworm is classified in the same family as roundworms due to the similar appearance. Heartworms are transmitted through mosquito bites during the warmer parts of the year. The heartworm floras are injected into a dog’s skin where they reside until maturity is reached. After a short while these worms travel through the blood stream, reaching the heart and lungs, where they will live for the duration of the pet’s life. Heartworms cause a pet a great deal of harm, as they block blood flow and oxygen to the body.

The hookworm is picked up by a dog when he/she drinks from a collection of water, digs in the ground, or ingests fecal matter. An adult hookworm lays thousands upon thousands of eggs inside a host, hooking on to the inside of the intestine, consuming blood and matter. The infected dog will not be capable of spreading hookworms as these eggs reside in the intestine and are carried out with defecation. The eggs are now in the environment, will hatch into larvae with the warm weather and molt into stage three infectionous larvae within a matter of weeks.

ing; vomiting, dry textured hair, loss of weight, blood in the stool, diarrhea, harsh cough, sudden collapse, and an overall poor condition.

Internal parasites affect dogs of all species, gender, age, and size. The most common internal parasites are; Hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, Roundworms (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina), Ancylostoma braziliense, and Uncinaria stenocephala), and heartworms.

Herding dogs have a sensitivity to the active ingredient, Ivermectin. Most medications will state on the label that they are not safe for herding dogs, however, always read the ingredients to be completely sure. If you are ever in doubt ask your veterinarian prior to purchasing a medication.

 2. What side effects will occur if my herding dog if he has a reaction to the ivermectin?

Ivermectin affects the central nervous system causing the dog to develop poor reflexes, ataxia, dilated pupils, elevated saliva levels, coma, and cranial nerve abnormalities.

Vomiting, loose stools, and perhaps blood within the stools.

Yes. This hookworm can penetrate the human skin causing a condition called cutaneous larval migrants, more commonly called creeping eruption or ground itch in lament terms. These hookworms can do one of two things; one, they can either simply cause a severe rash while they burrow under the skin or two, migrate into the human intestine and cause a condition known as eosinophilic enteritis.
