PET SYMPTOMS

A number of eye aliments link the symptom of an octal discharge. Whether the condition be that of conjunctivitis, allergies, or a simple irritation; the only condition that produces a discharge is the eye infection. Eye infections of newborn are called Opthalmia neonatorum. This infection happens just before or just after the eyelids open, which is usually ten to fourteen days after birth. Opthalmia neonatorum is an infection of the conjunctiva, the thin layer of tissues lining the eyelids. All breeds of canines and felines can acquire this Vet-Check-ear-Gammill 1006_DT.jpgcondition as the infection is caused by the common staphylococcus bacterium.

Opthalmia neonatorum is caused by one of two things: one, the mother was infected with a vaginal infection at the time of birth. Two, the infant was birthed into an environment of unclean nature. One or both of these instances can harbor the staphylococcus bacterium, leading to this condition commonly seen in newborns.

Symptoms of Opthalmia neonatorum include; upper and lower eyelid fustian accompanied by a bulging appearance due to the accumulation of discharge residing behind the eyelids. The second possible symptoms includes, a small opening between the upper and lower eyelids maybe present with symptoms of a thick, creamy textured discharge seeping through. The third symptom is ulcerations of the cornea and conjunctiva with a possibility of scarring and opacification. The conjunctiva is the thin, clear layer of tissue over the white of the eye. The cornea is the translucent posterior portion in the eye which is over the iris, pupil, and anterior chamber.
