Flea dirt appears as tiny dark specks. It’s is a mixture of flea waste and dried blood. The simplest way to find if your pet is affected by fleas is to run a comb through the fur of your pet. If you notice any small black insects on the fur, it surely is affected.
The ticks are habitually located in brushy, wooded areas and get attached to your dog walking in the thick vegetation, making it imperative for you to check your dog after every outing, even if it visited only the backyard. It is easier to catch ticks before they attach to your pet than probing them afterwards. There are two kinds of ticks affecting dogs: soft ticks (argasids) and hard ticks (ixodids). Contrary to popular belief ticks are not insects, but invertebrates that are very much related to spiders and mites. Quite like fleas, they also survive on the blood of animals. The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, is widespread among dogs, the world over. Hard ticks or Ixodid ticks transmit Lyme's disease that can affect horses, dogs and humans. Baby ticks with six legs usually survive on blood derived from smaller animals like rodents and shrews, but the adults having eight legs feed on the blood of larger living animals, including dogs. Ticks draw blood by popping in their mouth into the flesh of their victims. Their bite causes intense irritation, itching and oozing of liquid.
Tick symptoms can be wide ranging and include fever, swelling in the joints, loss of appetite, pain in body or limbs and difficulty in walking.
